THINWORX – A Green approach that is good for business

There can be no debate that the computing approaches of the past were inefficient and definitely not green. The IT landscape was dominated with a large numbers of servers, running at low capacity, with the client computing environment continuing to require more and more computing power. IT departments began to realize that the majority of their operating budgets were consumed with maintaining complex operating environments. Meanwhile the end computing clients just wanted a reliable tool to get their job done. GeNUIT’s customers use the THINWORX software so that end computing clients can access applications residing on remote servers. Above and beyond the compelling cost benefits, security is of critical importance. We have read in the newspapers about customers whose reputations have been tarnished when sensitive information has been lost or stolen from laptop or desktop computers. A recent study at Pepperdine University concluded that data loss costs US business more than $18 billion dollars a year. Imagine the carbon impact associated with such an expense.

The Gardner Group recently estimated that business and consumers will replace 800 million PC’s worldwide from 2007-2012. The report further estimated that 73 percent of these units would wind up in landfills and not be properly recycled. THINWORX helps reduce the carbon impact associated with this trend. Server Based Computing (SBC) requires a minimum of client computing power. Older PC’s don’t have to be refreshed as often because the computing complexities are handled by the servers not the client. THINWORX also support newer thin client devices that are gaining popularity. These units are much smaller and thus generate a smaller carbon footprint. In terms of energy a typical PC might consume between 70-150 watts of power while some thin clients that are now being built use less than 10 watts.

Customers are demanding more from software manufacturers to help them become more profitable and to be more environmentally responsible. GeNUIT is listening.
